Topic Introduction :

With the globalization more and product companies are resorting to outsourcing their manufacturing operations. This outsourcing ranges from complete product (Apple iPOD/iPAD to all the laptops!) to sub modules (as in the case of automobile manufacturing). This is further complicated by the ever evolving international standards for various reasons predominantly from the environment impact. Above all with the whole world becoming a single market globalized manufacturing is becoming a must. Under these circumstances monolithic way of designing and manufacturing under one roof is giving way to distributed development across the globe in different time zones. This has forced the product development process to go through a metamorphosis with lot of disciplined way working becoming the order of the day. In this changed scenario unless the developers understand the product life cycle, developing a product efficiently with in the time frame and cost is a challenge. In this session we will be briefly looking at what is Product Life Cycle and its various elements. Also we will see impact of PLC on the product development. The examples taken are for an electronic product which is a bit more complex then pure mechanical products and at the same time today there no pure mechanical products as most of the products have an element of electronics to it.

He Mr.S.A.Srinivasa Moorthy (Moorthy), Vice President- Design Engineering, Head – India Development Center, Sanmina-SCI Technology India Pvt. Ltd.

Mr.Moorthy holds a Masters in Technology (Industrial Electronics) from NIT-Surathkal India.

As head of India Development Center Mr.Moorthy is setting a Global center of Excellence for Product Engineering for Global Product Development.

As a Global Head of System Engineering Practice, he managed the System Engineering and Product Engineering service across all the domains for Engineering R&D Service line of business.

Has been responsible for three new service line creation viz. Concept to Manufacturing (C2MTM), Total Product Support (ToPSTM) and Value Analysis and Value Engineering (VAVETM)

He has over two and half decades of experience in Product development in domains like Avionics, Medical Devices, Automotive, Telecom & Networking products. Has extensive experience in Manufacturing and New Product Introduction. He specializes in developing products for global market and developing world.

Experienced in Regulated Industry (FDA/FAA) product development

Has been member of strategic marketing team of Engineering and R&D Line of Business

Starting his career in 1985 with CDOT. He was responsible for the Central Space Switch Complex of the 40,000 Line Digital switch.

After moving into HCL created the Ethernet Switches, Routers and RAS product Line for HCL Infosystems (earlier a known as HCL-HP a joint venture of HCL and HP, USA).

Later he headed the developed India’s first indigenous IP DSLAM called DIAS and a host of networking routers and DSL Models for Indian Telecom network as part of a start up

He later joined HCL back and established HCL’s Product Engineering Practice as part of Concept to Manufacturing (C2M) service covering Low cost Product Design, Green Product Design from scratch. He also developed the Product Development Methodology Framework called ShristiTM.

He formulated program for talent grooming both in technical and managerial areas for the team members. As part of this initiative;

Formulated and established HCL Pioneering talent acquisition program called “Campus Adoption Program” for the acquisition of Fresh Engineers

Established “System Engineering University” internally for training experienced engineering system Design as part of continuing education.

Presents Papers in International Seminars & Conferences and contributes to technical publications.

Teaches undergraduate and graduate students on core and applied topics
